Kunzea, Kunzea ambigua aka Kanuka (Tasmania, Australia):

According to Shannon Becker, PhD RA "There is currently no known cure or vaccine for the current viral epidemic, which is caused by an enveloped virus, similar to the influenza A virus (IAV)....The essential oils and blends may, however be used in traditional ways for respiratory relief and psychological support." - Becker in Tisserand Institute Newsletter, March 2020.

Traditional Information:

Strong & Safe Bacteria-Buster; Antiviral, Antifungal, Antibacterial Terpene Alcohol. Detox, Toning, Hot & Moist. Also known as New Zealand Tea Tree;.

  • Anti-inflammatory: Reduces bruising.
  • Insect Repellant: And speeds healing of cuts, wounds, stings & bites
  • Stress Relief: Helps relieve nervous tension, anxiety, stress, headaches.
  • Respiratory Relief.
  • Energizing, Vitalizing Diuretic: Helps chronic fatigue syndrome.

Kunzea is an essential oil derived from a tall shrub in the Myrtaceae  (tropical respiratory, nutritious & strengthening tree) family, which grows wild in cool coastal areas in North-East Tasmania. It is closely related to Tea Tree, and has been called the most healing plant in Australia. It is commonly called Tick Bush because animals stay close to it due to its insect repellant qualities. It has a pleasant, leathery fragrance which makes it desirable for masculine essential oil blends.

Kunzea is sometimes called New Zealand Tea Tree. Kunzea has a unique composition, with a high content of important sesquiterpene compounds: globulol, viridiflorol, spathulenol, ledol and bicyclogermacrene; and a high proportion of Alpha-pinene (about 52%). Thus it is anti-inflammatory, and has been used by French physician Dr. Daniel Penoel with good results topically to reduce inflammatory responses in cases of Crohn's disease and the after-effects of radiotherapy treatments.

Kunzea is reported to have good pain-relieving properties; relieves anxiety, stress, headaches & nervous tension; eases symptoms of influenza; and is useful for muscular, tendon and joint injuries. It works well by itself or in combination with other essential oils such as Rosemary, Basil and Peppermint. Kunzea soothes insect bites, & burns, and works well with Peppermint and Lavender.

When applied neat to the joints of toes affected by gout, Kunzea helps to relieve inflammation and releases uric acid deposits through the skin. A healing rash may appear, and the Kunzea essential oil reduces itching of the rash.

Kunzea reduces bruising and is good alone or combined with Helichrysum, (10%) diluted in Arnica infused oil. If Kunzea oil is applied to the area after the trauma and before bruising has started or has only just begun, the development of the bruise can be reduced.

Kunzea oil has had positive results in the treatment of rashes, skin irritations, eczema and acne. Kunzea oil has been found to be non-irritant and generally is well tolerated even when used undiluted on the skin. There are no known contraindications for its use during pregnancy at common dosages.

Kunzea oil has been tested for its effectiveness against a number of disease-causing bacteria. It is particularly effective against Staphylococcus aureus, including the MRSA variety (multiple antibiotic resistant), in a tested concentration as low as 0.16%.

Dr. Alan Lane (Tasmania, Australia) has reported dramatic anti-inflammatory effects for patients undertaking frequent sodium ascorbate intravenous treatments. He applies Kunzea essential oil to the injection site twice daily following injections, which prevents irritation and swelling of the veins. Oncology treatment demands many intravenous injections and the same problems arise as with sodium ascorbate. Kunzea oil gives promise of being of significant effect in routine every day oncological therapy with chemotherapeutic agents and of use in other areas of medical care. Hence, Kunzea oil holds promise in alleviating the pain and inflammation whenever multiple intravenous injections are required, either undiluted or diluted in Calendula Infused oil.

4 ml (1/8 oz): $10.50; 5 ml (1/6 oz): $14.95; 7.5 ml (1/4 oz): $17.95; 15 ml (1/2 oz): $29.95; 30 ml (1 oz): $54.50; 50 ml: $98.50.

Energetic Observations: Kunzea's red vital energy comes in through the root chakra, brings energy slowly up the spine, CNS and heats the bones, grounding and empowering. -Star Johnsen-Moser, Intuitive Energetic Healer.

Energy Index: Spinal Cranial, Spine Ida Pingala, Spine Warming

References provided below are a representative sampling of research over the past 15 years which documents the antiviral, antibacterial, antimicrobial, antifungal, anti-inflammatory, diuretic & analgesic activity of essential oils in the Myrtaceae (tropical respiratory, nutritious & strengthening tree) family, but does not claim or imply the effectiveness of Kanuka Kunzea ambigua for the present viral pandemic - only that its antiviral, antibacterial, antimicrobial, & skin-healing characteristics may be an area of interest for future research.
