Thyme, Red, Thymus vulgaris (Spain):

According to Shannon Becker, PhD RA "There is currently no known cure or vaccine for the current viral epidemic, which is caused by an enveloped virus, similar to the influenza A virus (IAV)....The essential oils and blends may, however be used in traditional ways for respiratory relief and psychological support." - Becker in Tisserand Institute Newsletter, March 2020.

Traditional Information:

A strong oil, must be used in tiny amounts!

Thyme revives and strengthens mind and body, builds immune system. Red Thyme, the warming and active Thymol, Carvacrol type, kills viruses but can irritate mucous membranes and cause dermal irritation.

  • Speeds Healing of Severe Skin Disease: (Leprosy, Staph, Body Lice), Viruses in the Blood, Plague.
  • Thyme fights resistant  strep & staph (MRSA), tiny amounts for PANDAS treatment - must be well diluted.
  • Nerve & Heart Tonic: Increases circulation, stimulates blood flow, speeds repair; regenerative for paralysis.
  •  Anti-inflammatory action of Carvacrol (Fachini-Queiroz FC et al 2012).
  • Analgesic: Eases rheumatism, backache, headaches, joint pains, and sciatica. Apply on skin for joint pain.
  • Antiviral: Eases respiratory infections, chills, colds/flu, bronchitis, pneumonia.Active against herpes. "It has been suggested that thyme essential oil interferes with the viral envelope." (Braun L & Cohen M. 2015).
  • Air Disinfectant: Thyme with Clove, Lemon & Chamomile.
  • Also Blends With: Bergamot, Lemon, Rosemary, Lavender, Melissa, Sage, Marjoram, Pine, and Balsam.

"GC–MS of th Thymus oil resulted in the identification of 24 compounds. Chemical compounds found in Thymus vulgaris  were terpenes and aromatic compounds. The major compounds were thymol, camphene, caryophyllene, humulene, α-terpeniol. carvacrol, and para-cymene. Carvacrol breaks down the biofilm that coats resistant Strep & Staph bacteria." - Al-Asmar et al, 2017.

In an in vitro study, Red Thyme (Thymus vulgaris) showed significant HA inhibition when applied to the culture media. (Tisserand and Young 2014)

Precautions: Avoid frequent use, and do not use undiluted — may be a skin irritant due to the phenols in this oil. Do not use when pregnant.
