According to Shannon Becker, PhD RA "There is currently no known cure or vaccine for the current viral epidemic, which is caused by an enveloped virus, similar to the influenza A virus (IAV)....The essential oils and blends may, however be used in traditional ways for respiratory relief and psychological support." - Becker in Tisserand Institute Newsletter, March 2020.
Traditional Information:
"Turmeric essential oil has been used in Egyptian and Ayurvedic medicine for 4000 years for its antiseptic, antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, anti-mutagenic, diuretic and antispasmodic qualities.
The oil is also a strong relaxant, metabolic and emotional balancer, providing psychological support by means of anxiety relief.
Turmeric contains at least 20 molecules that are antibiotic, 12 that are anti-inflammatory, with at least ten different antioxidants; as well as vitamins, phenols and other alkaloids.
Curcumin and other curcuminoids (active chemical compounds in Turmeric), offer numerous health benefits; however, the bioavailability of the active ingredients in Turmeric is low, meaning that most curcumin that is ingested gets metabolized before it can be absorbed. Black Pepper enhances bioavailability of Turmeric: When Piperine (active ingredient in Black Pepper essential oil) is combined with Turmeric, the bioavailability is dramatically increased (2000%). Thus, when using Turmeric, most of it is unutilized unless supplemented by Black Pepper." - Dr. Axe 2017

References provided below are a representative sampling of research over the past 15 years which documents the antiviral, antispasmodic, digestive & immune-building activity of essential oils in the Zingiberaceae (medicinal antibacterial & seasoning spices Ginger) family, but does not claim or imply the effectiveness of Turmeric for the present viral pandemic - only that its antiviral, antibacterial, antispasmodic, strengthening & regenerative characteristics may be an area of interest for future research.
